Changing Preferred Name/Gender Identity - Employees

Changing Your Preferred Name and Gender Identity

Faculty and staff can update their BMCC personal information to reflect their preferred name (first and/or middle) and/or preferred gender identity in internal BMCC and CUNY areas. This will only change your information on CUNYfirst; it is not a legal name change or legal gender change.

  1. Visit the BMCC Office of Human Resources Form Website.
  2. Click on “Changes to Personal Information” and locate the Gender Change Request form (pdf) and/or the Preferred Name Request Form (pdf).
  3. Submit the completed form(s) to the Office of Human Resources via email at officeofhumanresources@bmcc.cuny.edu. No documentation or proof is required.
  4. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Office of Human Resources at 212/220-8300.
  5. Please expect an email from Human Resources within a week of the request, confirming the requested changes have been made and sharing the next steps the employee needs to take to update a BMCC ID and/or email address.

Changing Your Name on Your BMCC ID Card

  1. Complete all steps under Section A above.
  2. Visit Public Safety located on the 2nd floor of the Main Building (199 Chambers) in room S-211. The office is on the left after entering the building (before going through the turn-styles).
  3. Request to meet with Leonardo Zavala-Salas to update your BMCC ID to reflect your preferred name. If Mr. Zavala-Salas is not available at that time, you may request to make an appointment.
  4. Public Safety will verify that the preferred name change information has been submitted.
  5. Once the necessary information is submitted, a new BMCC ID card will be issued.
  6. If you already have a BMCC ID card, you will need to return it to get your updated one.

Changing Your Email to Reflect Your Preferred Name / Gender Identity

Preferred name refers to your first and middle name. It does not include your last name. You can change the first name and/or the initials of the original BMCC email address assigned to you. The name that appears when you send an email would also be changed.

  1. Complete all steps under Section A above.
  2. Submit a ticket request to change to your preferred name here.
  3. When the ticket is resolved, your email and associated name will update to reflect your preferred name.
  4. Please contact the Service Desk at userservices@bmcc.cuny.edu if you would also like to update your information on the BMCC directory.
  5. The Service Desk will coordinate with Public Affairs to update the information on the BMCC directory.
